Sweet Reminisce of bygone days!
That chirping springtime melody,
When I was once at liberty,
To travel forth, along these ways
That lovely face, that comely glow,
Whose love was my own sanctuary,
In this my penitentiary,
That was voice heard, so long ago.
Misfortune now envelops me,
As friends await my destiny,
While blossoms frolick merrily,
I weep o'er my captivity,
Yet, who shall hear my mournful sighs?
Will death descend upon me so?
My paradise, lost long ago?
These gnawing woes, these helpless cries!
Give liberty, O Captor mine,
O'er this my woeful melody,
Do not beguiled O Listener be,
Thus set me free! for Love Divine!
