Under the shady bough of a maple tree
Wondering how beautiful life could always be,
Smelling the sweet scent of a nearby flower,
And you beside me smiling tenderly
The warm gentle flow of a summer shower
And children playing, laughing gleefully
I know these joys are only momentary
For I am not untouched by misery
Of loved ones lost, of war, of treachery
Of anger, malice, hate, of cruelty
Orphaned children roaming everywhere
Hopeless mothers searching here and there.
Sufferring, helplessness and human strife
Why is there such tragedy in life?
With gnawing thoughts my soul is but entrapped
As I lie listless  here, my feelings sapped
Under the shady bough of a maple tree
Wishing that somehow life could gentle be.
